Introducing Our "Reflections" Series |
|
Dear Friend, How often do we have the opportunity to look at our own lives and pinpoint experiences that shaped our character? For those of us lucky enough to have spent formative times in the wilderness, this is a simple exercise. I asked some of my former Wabun campers to share where their lives have taken them, and how strongly the impacts of their time on canoe trips play a role in their lives now. I think their answers give a resounding call for the necessity of wilderness travel. Here is a taste of the “Reflections” series to come: “... It’s not that certain aspects of my life are the way they are because of Wabun, it’s that my entire life is the way it is because of my time spent up north. The confidence and strength I have gained are absolutely unlike anything I have learned anywhere else. At this moment, I am writing this piece sitting on my balcony in Seville, Spain. I am in the middle of the second semester of my gap year, and decided to live in Spain to immerse myself in another language and culture. I am loving the experience so far, but I am acutely aware that my confidence and desire to learn are the direct result of the person that Wabun has shaped me into.” - Elise Pope Sincerely, Josephine Moore, Advisory Panel |
